Nitrogen isotopic constraints on nutrient transport to the upper ocean

چکیده

Abstract Ocean circulation supplies the surface ocean with nutrients that fuel global productivity. However, mechanisms and rates of water nutrient transport from deep to upper are poorly known. Here, we use nitrogen isotopic composition nitrate place observational constraints on Southern into pycnocline (roughly 1.2 km), as opposed directly ocean. We estimate 62 ± 5% phosphate originate Ocean. Mixing, advection, accounts for most gross input pycnocline. in net, mixing carries away Despite quantitative dominance transport, richness relies large-scale advective flow, through which nutrient-rich is converted nutrient-poor eventually flows North Atlantic.

Isotopic constraints on the pre-industrial oceanic nitrogen budget

The size of the bioavailable (i.e., “fixed”) nitrogen inventory in the ocean influences global marine productivity and the biological carbon pump. Despite its importance, the pre-industrial rates for the major source and sink terms of the oceanic fixed nitrogen budget, N2 fixation and denitrification, respectively, are not well known. These processes leave distinguishable imprints on the ratio ...

Seasonal Variations of Upper Ocean Transport from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean via Indonesian Straits*

Seasonal variations of upper-ocean mass transport between the Pacific and Indian Oceans via the Indonesian Throughflow (ITF) are examined using numerical experiments with a 11⁄2-layer, reduced-gravity model forced with specific climatological winds. The model ITF transport, computed as a sum of through-strait transport, has an annual range of more than 8 Sv (an annual harmonic of amplitude 4.2 ...

Isotopic constraints on glacial/interglacial changes in the oceanic nitrogen budget

[1] We investigate the response of the N/N of oceanic nitrate to glacial/interglacial changes in the N budget, using a geochemical box model of the oceanic N cycle that includes N2 fixation and denitrification in the sediments and suboxic water column. This model allows us to quantify the isotopic response of different oceanic nitrate pools to deglacial increases in water column and sedimentary...

Toxin production by Crocosphaera watsonii: structure and influence on nutrient cycling in the upper ocean

Cyanobacteria are abundant components of the biosphere and play a crucial role in carbon sequestration and oxygen supply to the atmosphere. In addition to their photosynthetic capabilities, some cyanobacteria contribute to global ocean productivity by fixing inert atmospheric nitrogen gas (N2) into a bioavailable form. Many of these nitrogen-fixing bacteria (diazotrophs) also produce toxic meta...
